Check the Local Laws

Before doing anything be certain you are not breaking any laws. To help with this we have included some helpful web links below. There are many websites that contain more information as well as have the answers to many of the questions you may have are available. Here are a few that we have found to be good sources of additional information.

Best Trap for a Hog

Essentially a hog trap is a means of corralling or trapping the pig to prevent them from doing further damage to the area in which they are found. The types and styles of traps can vary greatly ranging from a snare to a cell phone operated remote gate system, to a homemade trap that the mind has invented.

There is no right or wrong kind of trap. The best hog traps are those that do the job using the means, method, and the purpose of which it was designed. Nothing fancy is needed to trap a hog and you don’t have to spend a fortune on one either.

Wanted creature or unwanted, they are still a living one that needs to be treated in a humane nature. You are going to need the trap to always be in the shade, even if that means providing artificial shading, as the pig cannot survive long without it.

Checking the traps regularly every day or two is requested again to be humane to the creatures. But please, if you are not going to check the trap for several days provide an auto watering device, and plenty of feed to last her until you return!

Types of Hog Traps

As mentioned there are numerous types of traps to be found. Here are a few of the primaries.

  • Continuous Catch Doors – This includes saloon, swinging door and rooters
  • Drop Gate – This includes the guillotine gates, trap door
  • Narrow opening gates or wide opening gates

Near Trap Watching

If you are using a sow as bait a boar will sometimes make a large bed near the sow by biting off grass and twigs and piling them into a bed. If this occurs to not be surprised if they try to be overly protective of the sow as if it were now there own.

Territory marking are another area in which to be watchful. The markings happen when a boar scars the ground with his front feet and expels a foul smelling secretion from a gland under the belly. It can be easily smelled. It is not uncommon for them to be known to hop a fence that has gotten in the way that is as tall as 3 feet.
