What is the Best Survival Knife in 2017?

1Bringing in the best survival knife every time you go outdoors is a habit that anyone backpacker should learn.

As a backpacker myself, I can say that having your first is something you cannot forget, like first kiss, first crush and your first survival knife.

As time passes by, you still remember these things but you often just give it a glimpse then move on to the best that you have – your best kiss, best crush and best survival knife.

As people with emotions, we tend to stay with the best and we opt for the best!

What to look for in a survival knife then to make sure you got the best?

Tang

The tang is that part of your knife that gets into the handle. That is the part that you don’t see and only the one who created your knife saw it. You will get to see it once your knife breaks so no one really wish to see their knife’s tang. The best survival knife is the one with a full, solid blade all the way to the handle. It means that the tang is part of the blade and they are just one. With a full tang, you can be assured that your knife is one solid and durable knife. It is the strength of your knife. Least expensive knives come with durable steel blade but the blade is only connected to the top of the handle causing it to break easily.

The Handle

There are different types of handles for knives. Some are made of rubber while others are made of polymer. Remember that a knife with a shallow handle mostly doesn’t have a full tang so remember to avoid this kind of knife handle. There are survival knives that come with compass and a handle where you can place your match. These are cool features for a survival knife but if you lose your knife, you also lose your match, right. With a compass on the handle, would it make it harder for you to use if there is a compass there?

The Type of Blade

Most survival knives have two types of blades – a carbon and stainless blade. Which type of blade to choose then for your backpacking needs? A stainless blade is believed to be indestructible. Stainless steel blades are also known for longevity and for surviving regular wear and tear. The only con of using a stainless blade survival knife is that you will need to sharpen it often. A carbon steel blade on the other hand is known for holding its edge longer than a stainless blade. The only problem with carbon steel blade is that it is not rust resistant and gets rust easily.

The Design of the Blade

There are two types of blade design – a serrated and a straight blade. If you have a straight blade, chopping wood is easier. If you are in the wilderness, you can use stone to sharpen your straight blade knife as well. A serrated blade looks cool though but again, once it dulled, you will need a special sharpener to sharpen your serrated survival knife.

The Length of the Blade

A goes survival knife is said to be at least 6 to 12 inches long. If it is less than 6 inches, it might look like a toy and you cannot do much with it. Can you possibly use a 4-inch survival knife to cut woods? What if you don’t have a hawk or a hatchet? Your 8 inches survival knife can definitely cut those woods for you so you can make fire. If you are a small person, taking a 10 inches survival knife might be too much for you as well. It might look too big to be carried by you. This only means that the survival knife that you can have should also depend on your physical attributes like height and weight.

The Thickness of the Blade

If you are a beginner and you don’t really know anything about knives, asking your store assistant’s help can lead to better selection of knife. When it comes to thickness, one rule to follow is that you should get a 3/16 or 4/16 inches knife blade. At this thickness, you can be sure that your knife is solid and it can do basic stuff like chopping woods and cutting laminated things and paracord.

The Knife’s Sheath

Most survival knives come with a sheath in their packages. If your survival knife doesn’t come with a sheath, you can purchase a separate one. What is the best sheath then for your survival knife? When choosing a sheath for your knife, consider the lower attachment piece of the sheath. This lower attachment will allow you to strap your knife’s sheath into your boots or leg. You should also check for lanyard or belt attachment. These will allow you to strap the knife to your belt. Does the sheath come with a lanyard hole? Last but not the least; you should check how the sheath wraps your knife? Does it fit well? It should be moving inside the sheath and it should slip out of it when you move around. The best sheath to have is the one that fits your knife precisely, meaning the handle just meets the sheath.

What to avoid in your survival knife?

Choosing a good survival knife is important knowing that you will depend on most of the time when no one is there to help you. Outdoors, you just have to rely to your personal skills and ability and the gears that you brought with you hence if you knew what to avoid in a survival knife, you can surely pick a good one that you can depend on.

Avoid a knife with narrow tang

A narrow tang will mostly mean that the tang is not solid and that the part inside the handle is too narrow to take possible hard work. If you will use it to chop something, it can break easily. A narrow tang is the same as having a short blade where the blade ends where the handle begins.

Avoid a folding knife

Multi tools and folding knives are cool but if you are looking for a survival knife that will help you survive outdoors and in when in an unlikely situation, I don’t think a small, cute multi tool knife can do the job. If you are looking for a backpacking knife or an outdoor knife, folding knife and multi tools might work.

Avoid a huge and lengthy knife

Choosing the best survival knife is not about becoming Rambo. Those are just the movies but in real life, large survival knives don’t work like they do in the movies. Besides, it is too uncomfortable carrying such large knife. If you are doing your backpacking activities in areas where the things that you have to worry is chopping wood and cutting paracord, there is no need for you to get a survival knife that can kill a crocodile or a lion. Get real!

Conclusion

There are a lot of survival knives reviews out there that aims to guide and help you choose the best survival knife in the market today. With these reviews, picking the one that suits your needs and matches your budget would be a lot easier. Different survival knife reviews will also help you understand what each knife offers and how you can take advantage of it once you find yourself in the jungle with only your survival knife in your hands! Still, in the end, the top survival knife is that knife that you can afford, that knife that comes with the important features that you need to survive and the knife that came from a manufacturer that you trust. Happy shopping!
