The Top 8 Best Holographic Sight Reviews

If you are looking for a way to acquire your target in the most precise way possible, getting a great holographic sight is your best chance.

Out of the 8 sights reviewed below, the top 3 holographic sights are:

  1. Vortex Venom Red Dot
  2. Trijicon RMR Type 2
  3. Burris Fastfire III

Before the red dot sight was introduced, there were iron sights. Iron sights require more skill in order to use well, while red dot sights can be used even with both eyes wide open. With an iron sight, the user needs to align his sight with the sight axis and the target with one eye closed. With one eye closed, the view of the target and its surrounding is limited and a small mistake can mean a big miss, so it takes a lot of practice to perfect the use of an iron sight.

With a holographic sight or a red dot sight, you can now just point your gun to the target, wait for the aiming reticle to focus on the target then just pull the trigger. Since holographic sights are in red or green, seeing it in broad daylight is also easy while iron sights are pretty much invisible in low light conditions.

Three types of red dot sights

  • Reflex sights

In this category, the red dot is projected upward from the objective lens. From the objective lens, it is projected to the shooter’s eye. The objective lens act like a mirror lens hence light transmission is not as great as the other type of red dot sights because it doesn’t allow light to pass through the lens. For expensive reflex sights, the objective lens are coated so that it can reflect the wavelength of light emitted by the LED. This is called reflective coating. Other reflex sights also employ the help of fiber optics and tritium to make it effective in low light conditions.

  • Holographic sights

Holographic sight is also known as a holographic diffraction sight or holographic weapon sight.  In this category, the sighting reticle is imposed on the target with the help of a laser transmission hologram. The laser light will take note of the target’s picture and this picture can be viewed in the hologram or sandwich glass window in your sight. In principle, a holographic sight is like an aperture sight where in your target can appear like 50 yards in front of you, virtually. The laser light produced by holographic sights is polarized hence people wearing polarized eyeglasses might find it an issue. Most gun shooters actually uses reflex and holographic sights without knowing its difference and it is fine because they serve the same purpose, quick target acquisition and higher shooting accuracy. One thing is for sure though, these two are not laser sights.

  • Laser sights

This category means that you have a sight emitting laser that travels from the weapon, to the target then back to the weapon again. The laser light is also visible to the user but the visibility is dependent on the distance of the target, the brightness of the environment, other conditions like fog, dust and smoke and the battery of the laser sight. Laser sights of today only becomes visible when it is directly hitting the target. There are laser sight users who use the laser light to point objects to other (just like how military use it to point a target for one of their crew members). Should you go for a laser sight then? Personally, laser sights are considered less practical than reflex or holographic sights because it requires more power to run. It is also limited by the environment like when it is too light outside (broad daylight) or it is too foggy. The only time that laser sight works is in ideal conditions which are good if you are a target shooter joining a competition. If you are in a battle though this kind of sight might not be practical.

Conclusion

Finding the best holographic sight for the money can be confusing because you might end up choosing a reflex sight instead of a holographic sight that you want to have. The good thing is, reflex sights are as good as holographic sights so there is not much a difference between the two types of sights. Other considerations to focus though when choosing for a good sight are field of view, occlusion, washout and the ability of the sight to do Cognitive-witnessing without interfering with the performance of the iron sight. Last but not the least; reliability is also a major consideration especially if you will be using it for hunting where the weather condition is often unpredictable.
